California Bill Orders New Oil Permits to Consider Environment (1)

State officials reviewing new oil or gas drilling permits also will have to consider the effects extraction will have on public health and the environment under a bill heading to the California governor.

The California Senate Sept. 3 approved a bill sponsored by the Environmental Working Group and the Natural Resources Defense Council that updates how the state’s Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources regulates oil and gas. The Assembly approved the bill Sept. 5, clearing the way for the governor to sign or veto.
