California Bill on Oil, Gas Buffer Zones Dies in Committee (1)

A bill that would require California to consider setbacks for oil and gas wells near schools, playgrounds, homes, and health care facilities died in committee Wednesday, with Democrats going against a fellow party member to sink the bill on a 4-5 vote.

The Senate Natural Resources and Water committee did vote 5-3 to allow SB 345 to come back for consideration at its next meeting Aug. 12. It’s unclear what will happen next given the abbreviated legislative session, which ends Aug. 31, and which has been delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.
