California Bans Lead, Mercury, Forever Chemicals in Cosmetics

Cosmetics containing lead, mercury, so-called “forever chemicals,” and other toxics will be banned in California beginning in 2025, under a bill signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday.

California is the first state to ban the two dozen chemicals or contaminants if they’re intentionally added to makeup, body wash, shampoo, or other cosmetic products.

The European Union has prohibited the same ingredients, according to an Assembly analysis of the bill. The chemicals have been linked to cancer, and other reproductive and ill health effects.
