California Asks Appeals Court to Preserve Roundup Verdict

The state of California is asking the Ninth Circuit to uphold a multimillion-dollar verdict against Roundup pesticide maker Monsanto, now owned by Bayer AG.

State Attorney General Xavier Becerra submitted an amicus brief this week in support of Edwin Hardeman, who used the herbicide, whose active ingredient is glyphosate, for years on his large plot of land in Sonoma County, Calif.

Hardeman sued Bayer, along with tens of thousands of other consumers, arguing that years of exposure to glyphosate caused his non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. A jury last year ordered Monsanto to pay $80 million in damages, which the trial judge reduced...
