Businesses Ask Senate to Ease Permitting for Geothermal Power

Business owners and researchers urged lawmakers June 20 to revamp the government’s loan program and permitting system for geothermal energy companies.

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing—its first in 13 years on renewable energy harnessed from the Earth’s heat—followed a May 30 Energy Department report analyzing how the U.S. can make use of geothermal energy.

Speakers from federal and state agencies and energy company executives described geothermal energy as a relatively untapped clean power source that could be an economic boon in the country if certain obstacles are lifted.
