Brazil to Ban Mercury-Containing Thermometers, Blood Pressure Meters

Brazil will ban the production, importation and sale of thermometers and blood pressure meters that contain mercury as of 2019, the government announced.

The decision, announced March 7 by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), an arm of Brazil’s Health Ministry, was made to comply with the Minamata Convention on Mercury. The global treaty, made final in 2013, aims to protect human health and the environment from harmful effects of mercury, a neurotoxin that can cause brain, kidney and lung damage.
