Brazil Orders Safety Upgrades After Deadly Dam Collapse

Brazil is requiring federal agencies to conduct on-site safety inspections of all dams under their jurisdiction after the latest deadly Vale SA tailings dam collapse.

Brazil’s National Water Agency (ANA) and the National Mining Agency (ANM) also must prioritize inspections of dams that they classify as high risk or potentially high risk, according to a Jan. 29 Environment Ministry statement.

A newly created presidential council ordered the creation of an interministerial commission to revise Brazil’s 2010 national dam safety policy. The commission, which would include water and mining agencies, would have 30 days to propose how to overhaul ...
