Boston Bans Plastic Bags for Retailers

Boston’s bill banning plastic bags from retailers could give Massachusetts momentum to pass the ban statewide, a state legislator said.

Retailers in the city will have to stop giving customers single-use plastic bags and start charging them 5 cents for paper or compostable plastic bags under a new city law, which takes effect in December 2018.

The plastic bag industry and retailers fought hard against the ordinance but faced pushback from environmental groups who say single-use plastic bags are not recyclable, cause litter, and clog storm drains.
