Bill Gates Seeks Up to $1.5 Billion for New Energy Technologies

Bill Gates’ startup fund to finance up-and-coming energy technology seeks to raise $1 billion to $1.5 billion by late 2020, the Microsoft Corp. co-founder said June 24.

Breakthrough Energy Ventures, which Gates chairs, has dedicated more than $1 billion in committed capital to support entrepreneurs of companies that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20%. The initiative was announced in November 2015 to pursue the long-shot technological breakthroughs needed to avert climate change that are too risky for venture capitalists.
