Biden’s Amtrak Request Comes Up Short in House Spending Bill

President Joe Biden’s budget request for Amtrak would get chopped down in draft legislation House appropriators released Wednesday, while the overall transportation budget would get a boost.

The Transportation-HUD spending bill would provide $105.4 billion in total budgetary resources to the Transportation Department for fiscal 2023, about $942 million more than Biden requested, according to a summary from the House Appropriations Committee. The agency is funded by a mix of trust funds and discretionary spending.

Appropriators said the legislation would boost discretionary spending on transit and passenger and freight rail by 23%, and expand port programs by almost 30%.
