Biden Moves to Tap Permanent Air Chief Before Emissions Push (1)

President Joe Biden nominated Joseph Goffman to head the EPA’s air office on Tuesday, a step toward filling a role at one of the agency’s busiest sections that has been vacant since the start of the administration.

Goffman has served as acting head of the Office of Air and Radiation since January 2021, overseeing the Environmental Protection Agency’s regulatory moves on closely-watched vehicle, mercury, and hydrofluorocarbon emissions.

During that time, the administration drew complaints from Republican lawmakers it wasn’t acting fast enough to fill the important position and was instead relying on political appointees.
