BGOV Bill Summary: H.R. 535, PFAS ‘Forever Chemical’ Package (1)

The Environmental Protection Agency would have to take several steps to regulate and mitigate pollution from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) under a manager’s amendment to H.R. 535.

The measure, compiled by the House Energy and Commerce Committee from several PFAS-focused bills, would:

  • Effectively bar the manufacturing of new PFAS, sometimes known as “forever chemicals.”
  • Direct the EPA to establish drinking water standards for the chemicals and designate certain PFAS as hazardous substances under the law that governs the Superfund cleanup program.
