Batteries Emerge as Reliable Power Source in U.K. for First Time

Batteries are being considered as a steady supply of electricity for the first time in the U.K. after the technology won its biggest subsidy contracts yet in a national auction.

About 500 megawatts of new battery projects obtained 15-year contracts from the government, according to results of the contest published on Dec. 9 by National Grid Plc, the U.K. power network manager. Starting in 2020, the batteries the batteries will be on standby for use when demand spikes.
