Barrasso Bill Would Give States More Power on Endangered Species

The tug of war between states and the federal government has gotten an additional set of tugs from Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), drawing on ideas from the Western Governors’ Association on how to revamp the Endangered Species Act.

Barrasso has released a discussion draft bill that envisions a much stronger role for states in shaping recovery plans for endangered species, stirring the fears of environmental activists that states will gain a veto power over efforts to protect species.
