Atlantic Richfield, Montana County Reach $30 Million Cleanup Deal

Atlantic Richfield Co. and a local Montana government have agreed on a proposed Superfund cleanup and economic development agreement amounting to more than $30 million.

Anaconda-Deer Lodge County, Mont., announced the proposed agreement late Tuesday. The Anaconda Smelter Superfund site covers about 300 square miles of the county. Atlantic Richfield is the primary company working with the Environmental Protection Agency and local officials to clean up a century of copper smelter waste deposited in the area’s soil.
