Atlantic Richfield Co. and the EPA are on their way to a concrete cleanup plan for the Anaconda Co. Smelter Superfund site in Montana.
The Environmental Protection Agency announced July 30 that the company, Montana, and others had settled on a framework for site cleanup.
The Superfund site is part of Acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler’s priority list of sites targeted for faster cleanup.
The 300 square mile site is near the former Anaconda Copper Mining Co. ore processing facilities. Wastes produced at the site contaminated soil, groundwater, and surface water with heavy metals.
