At Least Furloughed Workers Needn’t Worry the Lights Will Go Out

Federal employees who aren’t getting paid probably don’t have to worry about losing electricity or heat.

Most utilities have programs in place to keep the lights on for customers who can’t pay their bills, and some are reminding people as the partial government shutdown is about to enter its fifth week.

Customers of New Jersey-based Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. can take advantage of a 60-day grace period available to people facing “financial hardship due to circumstances beyond their control,” according to an emailed statement.
