Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam hails Amazon’s decision to build a highly coveted new office in Arlington’s Crystal City neighborhood as “a new model of economic development in the 21st century.”

But at least one urban-studies analyst wonders about that model. Richard Florida, author of several books on cities and demographic trends, questions why “progressive cities” would lure businesses “instead of putting all that money toward cleaning up their own waterfronts, addressing income inequality, or building affordable housing.”
