ALL ABOUT: California’s Fires and NASA

One of the areas burned by the Woolsey Fire, 30 miles outside Los Angeles, is a former NASA rocket engine testing and nuclear research facility where the state is overseeing soil and groundwater cleanup efforts.

The California Department of Toxic Substances Control said it will be taking air and soil samples on parts of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory site to ensure the communities affected by the fire are safe.

The Woolsey Fire reaches the ocean along Pacific Coast Highway near Malibu, Calif., on Nov. 9.
