Voluntary Paid Family, Medical Leave Model Spreads to Vermont

Vermont will follow neighboring New Hampshire in offering a state-backed, voluntary paid family and medical leave program, opened first to state government employees and then to private-sector employers and workers.

Gov. Phil Scott (R) announced Tuesday that Vermont has selected insurance carrier The Hartford to design and administer the paid leave program, after negotiating it as a benefit with unionized state government employees.

Workers who enroll will be eligible to take up to six weeks off annually for covered reasons and receive 60% of their pay during the leave. The time off is available for a worker to tend ...
