UnitedHealth Wins Class Status Battle Over Prostheses Coverage

Two UnitedHealth Group Inc. insureds lost their bid to represent a class allegedly denied coverage for prosthetic devices.

The ruling is a temporary victory for United, as Judge John F. Walter of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California Sept. 14 allowed the insureds to amend their lawsuit and renew their request for class certification.

The insureds last year accused United, the largest health insurer in the country, of systematically denying coverage for prosthetic devices for persons suffering from upper and lower limb loss. The insureds also alleged that United’s denials don’t identify an alternative device that...
