UnitedHealth Will Redo Prosthetic Device Claims, Ending Suit

UnitedHealthcare Insurance Co. will reprocess claims for prosthetic devices and change how it handles these claims in the future, resolving a 1,000-person class action accusing the insurer of ERISA violations.

The deal requires United to be more specific when it declines to cover a patient’s requested prosthetic device and to provide information about how coverage might be available in the future. The insurer also agreed to reprocess previously denied claims using these new procedures and to reimburse some people who paid out-of-pocket for prosthetic devices, up to a cap of $22,500 per person.
