United Healthcare Gets First Nod for Cancer Care Coverage Deal

United Healthcare Insurance Co. secured initial court approval for a settlement requiring it to pay up to $6.75 million to cancer patients seeking coverage for a treatment they say is more effective than traditional radiation.

The deal allows at least 90—and as many as 240—class members who paid out-of-pocket for proton beam radiation therapy to file claims and receive reimbursement of up to $75,000 each. These reimbursements are subject to an overall cap of $6.75 million, and the insurer agreed to pay up to $2 million in attorneys’ fees and costs separately from the settlement fund, according to court filings ...
