Southwest Pilot Gets 6,000-Plus Military-Leave Class Certified

Southwest Airlines Co. must face a class of workers in a pilot’s suit alleging it fails to pay employees who take short-term military leave despite paying employees for comparable forms of leave like jury duty and bereavement, the Northern District of California ruled.

The airline’s practice violates the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, lead plaintiff Jayson Huntsman says. The class could include more than 6,700 Southwest pilots, flight attendants, ground and technical operations workers, and other employees, according to Huntsman.
