Pension Solvency Sparring Expected to Spill Into 2020

Senate Republicans’ sweeping contribution to the pension solvency debate fills in some blanks about countering anticipated funding crises. But it raises serious doubts lawmakers will overcome polarizing differences before 2019 draws to a close.

GOP leaders released the latest entry in the stalled negotiations on Nov. 20, floating a far-reaching proposal one senior Republican tax aide told reporters would keep Finance Committee members busy in the coming year. Congress’ latest temporary budget agreement expires Dec. 20, giving lawmakers less than a month to pass whatever last-minute legislative wins they can string together before barreling into the 2020 election cycle.
