Cigna-Owned Insurer Loses Benefits Battle in Sixth Circuit

Life Insurance Co. of North America must rethink its decision to deny disability benefits to a woman who suffered from a hereditary disease that caused chronic pain and fatigue.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit on March 30 reversed a lower court’s ruling in favor of LINA—an affiliate of Cigna Corp.—after finding the insurer failed to conduct an in-person examination of the woman, “even though there was a clear medical consensus” that she suffered from a disease that caused chronic and severe pain. As a result, LINA will have to reprocess the woman’s claim for disability benefits....
