Case: Health Care & Benefits/Short-Term Disability Benefits (C.D. Cal.)

A federal district court in California said that Sedgwick Claims Management Services Inc. and AT&T Services Inc. abused their discretion in concluding that an employee wasn’t disabled by her depression for a four-month period, but that they didn’t abuse their discretion in concluding that she wasn’t disabled for several months before and after that time period. And the court said Sedgwick and AT&T didn’t abuse their discretion in denying her short-term disability benefits claim in its entirety as to her back condition. The court ordered Sedwick and AT&T to pay the employee short-term disability benefits for the four-month period.
