Baker Botts Expects to Move Summer Associates Online, Offer Jobs

Baker Botts is delaying the start of its summer associate program and expecting an online curriculum and early job offers for law students as firms wrestle with how to best manage their incoming talent pipeline in wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Houston-based law firm told Bloomberg Law that its 2020 summer program will begin no earlier than June 15th in light of health and safety concerns following the virus outbreak.

The program is expected to be “an online summer training program” that will provide its incoming class with “interactive, remote professional development opportunities,” the firm said in a statement to Bloomberg Law.

Baker Botts also announced that it is extending offers to its summer associates, with 1Ls receiving an offer to return next summer and 2Ls receiving full-time employment offers at the firm, contingent on academic performance.

Baker Botts is the latest law firm to offer positions to its incoming summer class without the customary seasonal try-out, an unusual move driven by the challenging circumstances created by the virus, which has forced many Big Law firms to go remote. Cahill Gordon & Reindel said that despite suspending its 2020 summer associate program, it would be paying the students in full and would be extending offers to join the firm full-time after their graduation in 2021.

Other law firms like Cooley, DLA Piper, and Vinson & Elkinshave also delayed the starts of their summer programs, an annual staple of attorney recruitment for Big Law, until mid-June.
