IRS Risks Exposing Taxpayer Data Without Digital Erasing Revamp

The IRS is at risk of revealing sensitive taxpayer data because it’s not using approved procedures to erase hard drives and laptops, an agency watchdog said in a report released Wednesday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) found in an investigation that the agency isn’t annually testing its equipment to wipe IRS technology at its Memphis Sanitization Site. The agency watchdog recommended that the IRS destroy hard disks that were not properly erased and release guidance to define accounting for damaged or missing hard disks.
