IRS Addressed Child Tax Credit Discrepancies, Watchdog Says

The Internal Revenue Service resolved discrepancies with eligible and ineligible recipients of advance Child Tax Credit payments, and it agreed with recommendations laid out by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, the inspector reported Tuesday.

From July-November 2021, the IRS incorrectly sent 3.3 million advanced Child Tax Credit payments totaling $1.1 billion dollars to taxpayers, while it failed to send 8.3 million payments to 4.1 million eligible taxpayers, according to the report.

The agency correctly sent more than 175.6 million payments, totaling $75.6 billion, to taxpayers, but sent 3.3 million payments to ineligible taxpayers totaling $1.1 billion.
