FEMA Notice: Rhode Island Severe Winter Storm, Snowstorm Major Disaster Declaration (IRC §165)

Major disaster declared for parts of Rhode Island due to severe winter storm and snowstorm that took place from Jan. 28 through Jan. 29, 2022, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced May 13. FEMA stated that the president has declared that a major disaster exists in Bristol, Kent, Newport, Providence and Washington counties, including the Narragansett Indian Tribe. The major disaster declaration is considered a federally declared disaster allowing taxpayers residing in the affected areas to elect under tax code Section 165(i) to claim casualty losses on their 2021 or 2022 tax returns.
