California Cannabis Pleads for Tax Breaks, Warns of Implosion

The state and the illicit market are the only entities profiting from California cannabis, operators from the farm to the dispensary told Gov. Gavin Newsom Friday, urging him to include a tax holiday in the budget proposal next month.

California’s heavy taxation and regulatory scheme is crushing the legal industry, 29 growers, retailers, and advocates said in a letter to Newsom and legislative leaders. The group warns that those in the legal, licensed market may be pushed back underground to survive.
