Biden Proposes $14.1 Billion IRS Budget to Improve Service, Catch Tax Cheats

The Biden administration’s 2023 budget request asks for $14.1 billion for the IRS, about $2.2 billion more than the enacted level in 2021 and $1.5 billion more than the omnibus spending deal signed this month.

The White House is requesting $6.35 billion for tax enforcement which includes investigations, exams and collections, a substantial increase from the 2021 enacted level of $5.07 billion. The request comes even as there is a renewed effort by Democrats to close what’s known as the “tax gap,” which is the difference between taxes owed and taxes paid.
