Washington D.C. Council Votes to Raise Taxes on Higher Earners

The Washington D.C. Council voted Tuesday to raise income taxes on single-filers making over $250,000 in annual income to fund social programs.

In an initial round of 2022 budget deliberations, the council voted by an 8-5 margin to increase the single earner tax rate from 8.5% to 9.25%, which proponents say would generate an extra $100 million next fiscal year. Those making more than $500,000 annually would be taxed at 9.75%, while the highest earners would be taxed at 10.75%.
