State of Wayfair: Rhode Island Abandons Notification

Rhode Island wants its money up front.

E-retailers selling products into Rhode Island would no longer have the option of simply notifying consumers they owe sales tax on their online purchases under legislation getting traction in the legislature. The legislation, inspired by the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in South Dakota v. Wayfair, would align Rhode Island with strategies in other states that require remote sellers and e-commerce marketplaces to collect and remit sales taxes to the state.
