Oregon Business Tax Enforcement Angers Its Northwest Neighbors

A symbolic Idaho law barring that state’s officials from enforcing an Oregon business tax in Idaho is underscoring larger and lingering tensions about tax policy between Pacific Northwest states.

Gov. Brad Little (R) signed a bill (H.B. 677) in March out of frustration among lawmakers that Oregon is trying to collect its corporate activity tax from Idaho businesses that sell cars, trucks, or other tangible personal property to Oregonians who cross the border to buy. Washington officials have similar concerns.
