Michigan Governor Offers Tax Perks to Retirees, Working Families

Low-income families and retirees in Michigan stand to benefit from tax plans outlined Wednesday by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who wants to triple benefits under the Earned Income Tax Credit and repeal the tax on pensions.

Whitmer, speaking during her state of the state address, called on the Legislature to restore the state EITC to its original form after it was slashed in 2011. Michigan’s credit was first implemented in 2006 at 20% of the federal credit. In the midst of a budget crisis five years later, lawmakers cut the credit to 6% of the federal credit.
