Lawmakers sent a $234.4 billion budget plan to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk late Wednesday that spends $9.5 billion of the state’s record surplus to give direct cash payments to 17.5 million Californians.
The Assembly and Senate approved the 29-bill package in time for the July 1 start of the new fiscal year. The Democratic governor is expected to sign the bills.
