Estonia, Hungary Block EU Efforts to Expand Tax Watchdog Role

Objections from Estonia and Hungary on Tuesday held up a proposed deal on tougher scrutiny of possible harmful tax regimes in European Union countries.

The two countries objected to a new mandate for the so-called Code of Conduct Group (Business Taxation). The group, consisting of representatives from all 27 EU member countries, screens regimes that might harm other members. It also draws up the list of jurisdictions the EU considers to be noncooperative in tax matters.
