Canadian Government in Digital Services Tax Talks with Provinces

Canada’s planned digital services tax is among the items being discussed in talks with provinces over how to share tax revenues, a top finance official said Thursday.

The routine federal-provincial discussions include Ottawa’s November pledge to temporarily tax the corporate revenue of foreign tech giants like Facebook Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. until an OECD-led effort to rewrite global tax rules is successful, Shawn Porter, Finance Canada’s associate assistant deputy minister, said.

“There are multiple irons in the fire as it relates to federal-provincial relations around revenue items and revenue sharing,” Porter told the Tax Executive Institute’s Midyear Conference.
