Wisconsin Enacts Virus Liability Shield, Unemployment Measures

Wisconsin businesses will be largely shielded from liability lawsuits related to Covid-19, under legislation signed into law by Gov. Tony Evers that also addresses the state’s unemployment system.

The legislation, special session SB 1, follows in the footsteps of measures enacted in more than 15 other states by broadly protecting businesses, nonprofits, schools, and other entities from lawsuits related to coronavirus exposure. The Democratic governor previously vetoed a sweeping Covid-19 response bill that included a liability shield along with a ban on workplace vaccine mandates and limits on the governor’s authority to issue emergency orders.
