Wave of California Bills Include Nursing Rooms for New Moms

For the second year in a row, California’s legislature has approved a bill that would require employers to provide clean, locked spaces for nursing mothers to pump breast milk.

Senate Bill 142 would expand statewide a version of the family-friendly requirements that San Francisco adopted in 2018. It’s making a repeat appearance after then-Gov. Jerry Brown (D) last year vetoed a similar bill, saying it was unnecessary.

Both versions were by Sen. Scott Wiener (D).

Father-of-four Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) hasn’t said whether he intends to sign the legislation.
