UPS Loses Challenge to Safety Citation Over Workers’ Footwear

United Parcel Service cannot avoid a citation and fine issued by California’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health over improper footwear policies for workers moving heavy crates, a state appellate court said Thursday.

A UPS worker was badly injured when a cargo container rolled over his foot in 2016. Cal/OSHA issued a citation for a serious accident as a result of the company’s failure to require employees to wear appropriate foot protection.

UPS policy didn’t provide footwear for workers who loaded and unloaded air cargo containers, but did require employees to wear shoes with adequate arch support and non-slip soles, ...
