Union Wage Increases Up in 2019, Mostly Due to Public Sector

Average pay increases for unionized workers in the U.S. in 2019 are running slightly ahead of 2018, mainly because state and local government workers are doing better than they were last year.

The average first-year increase in labor contracts for all U.S. workers is 3.2%, compared with 3.1% for the same period last year. That small bump comes from state and local government workers, who are seeing average first-year increases of 2.7%, compared with 2.3% last year.
