Uber Faces $650 Million Bill for New Jersey Driver Insurance

New Jersey recently sent Uber Technologies Inc. a $650 million tax bill after determining the rideshare company is wrongly classifying drivers as independent contractors. The move could also mean that Uber has to start paying drivers minimum wages and overtime.

Battle Continues: Uber says it’s challenging the “preliminary but incorrect determination.” The company is also fighting misclassification lawsuits in New Jersey, California, and Massachusetts and pushing a ballot initiative to exempt online platform operators from a new classification law in California.
