Uber Drivers Win $1.2 Million for Counsel in Fee Class Action

Uber Technologies Inc. will pay class counsel a total of $1.3 million for winning a class action alleging Uber took its “safe rides fee” out of drivers’ fares.

The fee award is appropriate even though it represents over 72% of the $1.85 million class recovery, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers wrote May 31 for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

In 2016 the court dramatically reduced the size of the putative class, “which in turn reduced the size of compensatory damages,” the court said.
