Sonoma County Employees Get Eight Weeks’ Paid Parental Leave

About half of Sonoma County, Calif.'s employees will be entitled to a new perk beginning this fall--320 hours of paid parental leave over 12 months. That’s under a one-year contract extension the county reached with a Service Employees International Union local.

Local 1021 covers 2,000 county employees, including clerical, supervisory, road maintenance, and social service workers, and some nurses.

Under the agreement, which extends to Feb. 27, 2019, workers will also get a lump-sum payment equal to 2 percent of salary; a paid Cesar Chavez Day holiday; and an eight-hour floating holiday. And starting Aug. 8, the county will...
