Social Justice-Based Firing Suit by Public Defender Goes Forward

A former Broward County, Fla., assistant public defender can pursue her lawsuit alleging she was fired for advocating for social justice issues during an unsuccessful campaign to unseat her boss, a federal judge in Miami ruled.

Ruby Green says she was terminated the morning after election day, when she lost her bid to serve as the county public defender to incumbent Howard Finkelstein. Finkelstein admitted in a contemporaneous interview with a local newspaper that he made the decision to fire her and that he did so based on statements she made while campaigning, Green says.
