The nomination of Kalpana Kotagal, President Biden’s pick to be a commissioner on the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, stalled 11-11 in the Senate labor committee, forcing an extra procedural step before full Senate consideration.
The party-line tie vote in the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Wednesday requires Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to hold an additonal procedural vote to to advance Kotagal’s nomination to the Senate floor.
Kotagal, currently a civil rights attorney at Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC, was nominated last month to replace Republican Commissioner Janet Dhillon, whose term expires in July.
