Seattle City Council to Consider Gig Worker Wage Protections

Gig workers in Seattle would receive the minimum wage, expenses, and increased flexibility to select rides under a measure activists say is the first-of-its-kind legislation in the nation.

The Seattle City Council will consider the bill (CB 120294) at its meeting Tuesday. The legislation would create a slate of benefits to which app-based drivers for companies like DoorDash Inc., Amazon Flex, and Grubhub Inc. would be entitled, while retaining their status as independent contractors. If passed, the measure will take effect in 18 months.
